Aromatherapy is the use of a plant's essential oil to achieve therapeutic effects and treat physical and psychological imbalances. An aromatherapy massage combines a range of massage techniques with the use of essential oils. Essential oils are highly concentrated extracts, comprising hundreds of chemical compounds which exist in trees, plants, herbs, grasses and flowers. Proper use of the oils helps to promote a more balanced lifestyle and as a result there is less likelihood of succumbing to every day illness and the effects of stress.
Aromatherapy massage sessions usually last for an hour but can be booked for longer or shorter periods, depending on your needs. It will involve your therapist asking questions about your general health and lifestyle, and discussing what you can expect from the treatment. This information is used as a basis for selecting and blending the appropriate essential oils for your specific needs at that time. An aromatherapy massage can be deeply relaxing, and involves a combination of lymphatic drainage, soft tissue and acupressure techniques to release congestion and encourage the elimination of toxins from the body. To obtain the most from each massage, it is recommended that you shower prior to treatment, rather than following. This gives the essential oils the optimum absorption time for best results.
One of the main areas where aromatherapy is effective is in aiding relaxation and the reduction of stress-related complaints. It is also valuable in the treatment of depression, menstrual problems, muscle and circulation problems, arthritis, headaches and migraines, as well as uses in skin care, to name just a few. Further treatments are your choice, with many people finding that regular treatments help them to cope with stress and stay "on top" of life. Hippocrates said that "a daily aromatic bath and scented massage are the way to health". Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could all follow that suggestion!
